The tsunami followed a massive earthquake, with a magnitude of 8.0 according to the U.S. Geological Survey, that struck about 200 kilometers off the coast of Samoa at 6:48 a.m. local time Tuesday. Japan’s Meteorological Agency warned of a possible tsunami of up to 1.6 feet (50 centimeters) tall along its eastern coast."
