Tsunami warning after Indonesia quake

Indonesia’s meteorological agency says a powerful earthquake has shaken western Indonesia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami alert for Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Thailand after the quake, with a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter Scale, struck off the Indonesian coast.

The US Geological Survey put the strength at 7.9.

Witnesses in the city of Padang, near the coast of Sumatra, said the quake had damaged buildings and bridges.

The shaking could be felt in high buildings in the capital, Jakarta, several hundred kilometres away and in neighboring Singapore and Malaysia.

There were no immediate reports of a high waves or injuries.
